Jazz Band Update
Jazz Band started this week! I am the piano section leader, and I’m really excited for this year! We are not going to Disney World again, but we are going on another cool trip. Along with the 7th and 8th grade concert bands, we will be going on a 3 day trip to Cleveland, Ohio and Cedar Point. The jazz band has the opportunity to play at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Even though this trip is not until the spring, I’m already really excited!

Piano Lately
Even though I haven’t been doing regular lessons this summer, I’ve been keeping up playing piano in general. You see, I have a complicated wrist. I have a cist (sack of liquid) hanging off of the tendons between my wrist bones, as well as dorsal wrist syndrome (where the dorsal pain fibre sends random pain signals to the brian). I’m going to be getting surgery in October, but for now I’m dealing with the pain caused by this combination.

So for piano this summer, I have been playing at church. I accompanied the preschool choir in June and this weekend I am playing with our praise band and accompanying a singer during offertory for Middle School Youth Weekend. I am a classically trained pianist, but for these accompaniments I am having to read chords and not play exactly what’s
written on the sheet of music. Even though I had a little bit of instruction with my jazz lessons last year, it’s a very different technique and requires more concentration when you are playing.
Are you trying anything new this summer?

Summer is Here
I mentioned quite a while back that our band and jazz band were going to a competition at Kings Island. We went, and both bands received first place! 7th grade band received a score of excellent, and jazz band received a score of superior. Not to mention hanging out in the park was lots of fun!
Ah, summer. Summer is a fantastic time where you can relax, hang out with friends, and sleep in. The only problem is that I am easily bored and I don’t like summer. I love school, hate weekends, hate summer. Yeah the break from work is nice, but three months is a bit long for me. I’ve only been out for 2 weeks as of today, yet I am longing to return to school.
I am going to Michigan to visit family over the 4th of July and church camp in Wisconsin the following week, but other than that, I’m not doing much.
If you have any ideas for how I could spend my free time, please comment! I’d also love to hear what you’re doing this summer! Have a fantastic day! =)

We’re back! Wow Disney World was so much fun! I had so much fun in the parks and on the rides, but one of the best parts was performing! We performed in a theater in Hollywood Studios. Both of our jazz bands and our swing choir got ratings of excellent! Probably the most exciting point of the evening was that a swing choir student, Grace, won a solo award! It was really cool! And then Mickey Mouse came onto the stage to celebrate all of the awards! What a great weekend!

Now, our Disney Jazz Bands are combining with the Blues Band (home band that didn’t travel) for a Mega Kings Island Band! We head for “Music in the Parks” in May. More rollercoasters!
Jazzing Up Disney World
My Jazz Band is going to Disney World in Orlando to be a part of the Disney Jazz Celebration. I play keyboard and various Auxiliary Percussion such as cowbell and tambourine. I am really excited because we are going for four days and visiting all four parks. And . . . I will be hanging out with my friends! I’ve included the video before explaining exactly what happens at the Celebration. I’ll be sure to let you know what happens as soon as we get home Monday!
